When asked to produce my cartography of the world, I thought "maps are obsolete, the world is changing, oceans are rising, animals are becoming extinct, what's the point?" I thought of a Buddha saying: "Change is the only permanent thing in the world" . I felt change had to be central in my representation of the world.... I wanted to involve children in my project, children from all over the world, united by their imagination, and their ability to grow, learn, adapt and change....I thought "Children will be the change they wish to see in the world" , they will make this Gandhi saying come true. Building blocks seemed like the perfect answer: children learn from them(numbers, letters, colors), but mostly they play by endlessly building and knocking down these boxes transformed by their imagination: A castle, a tower, a pirate ship! Wherever their imagination takes them....That's why I settled on the idea of the castle: it represents our world transformed and embellished by our children's imagination!!
